About
Ge’ez Calendar is made by the team behind Ge’ez, a free Ethiopian calendar app for iPhone used by Ethiopian and Eritrean communities around the world. This website brings the same calendar to every browser and phone.
How the dates are calculated
- Conversion between the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars uses exact day-count arithmetic (Julian Day Numbers) and is tested day by day from 1908 to 2100.
- Fasika and the movable feasts and fasts (Nineveh, Abiy Tsom, Hosanna, Siklet, Erget, Peraklitos, Tsome Hawaryat) are calculated each year. Fasika falls on the same Sunday as Eastern Orthodox Easter, the result of Bahire Hasab.
- Islamic holidays use the Umm al-Qura calendar. In Ethiopia the final date is announced after the moon is sighted and can be a day later.
- Genna is shown on January 7 every year, including years when Tahsas 29 would fall on January 8.
