How Ethiopian time works

Ethiopia uses a 12-hour clock that starts at dawn and dusk instead of midnight and noon. The first hour of the day ends at 7:00 in the morning, so 7:00 AM is 1 o’clock in Ethiopian time, noon is 6 o’clock, and 6:00 PM is 12 o’clock. The night is counted the same way: 7:00 PM is 1 o’clock at night.

To convert, subtract 6 hours from standard time: 8:30 AM is 2:30 in the morning in Ethiopian time. Because Ethiopia is close to the equator, sunrise and sunset stay near 6 o’clock all year, which makes this system natural. Ethiopia does not use daylight saving time.

The same clock is used in everyday speech in Eritrea, with Tigrinya names for the parts of the day: ንግሆ (morning), ድሕሪ ቀትሪ (afternoon), ምሸት (evening) and ለይቲ (night).
