About the Ethiopian calendar
The Ethiopian (Ge’ez) calendar has 13 months: twelve of 30 days and Pagume, which has 5 days, or 6 in a leap year. The year begins on Meskerem 1 (Enkutatash), which falls on September 11, or September 12 before a Gregorian leap year. The Ethiopian year number is 7 years behind the Gregorian one from September to December and 8 years behind from January to early September, because the two churches calculated the year of the Annunciation differently.
The calendar is used in Ethiopia and, for church and cultural life, by Ethiopian and Eritrean communities around the world. Its months are Meskerem, Tikimt, Hidar, Tahsas, Tir, Yekatit, Megabit, Miazia, Ginbot, Sene, Hamle, Nehase and Pagume.
