Hidar Michael (ኅዳር ሚካኤል) is the annual feast of Archangel Michael (Kidus Mikael) on Hidar 12 in the Ethiopian calendar. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church remembers St. Michael on the 12th of every month, but two days are celebrated as great annual feasts: Hidar 12 and Sene 12.
How it is celebrated
St. Michael is one of the best-loved saints in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and many churches are dedicated to him. On his feast the church’s tabot is carried around the church in procession, with priests chanting, drums and singing. Families who have made vows to St. Michael often host a mahber or zikir, a shared meal for neighbours and the poor.
The date
Hidar 12 falls on November 21 in most years and on November 22 in the year after an Ethiopian leap year.
