Kana Zegelila (ቃና ዘገሊላ, “Cana of Galilee”) on Tir 12 remembers the wedding at Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine, his first miracle. It follows Timket and is the closing day of the Epiphany festival.
How it is celebrated
In many towns the festivities of Timket continue for a third day. Where St. Michael’s tabot was taken to the water for Timket, it often returns to its church on Kana Zegelila with a procession of its own. Because of its link with the wedding feast, the day is also a popular one for weddings.
The date
Tir 12 is January 20 in most years and January 21 in the year after an Ethiopian leap year.
