Debre Zeit (ደብረ ዘይት, “Mount of Olives”) is the fifth Sunday of Abiy Tsom, the halfway point of the 55-day Great Lent. It remembers Jesus’ teaching on the Mount of Olives about the end of the world and his second coming (Matthew 24).
How it is observed
Debre Zeit is a church feast in the middle of the fast: the readings and hymns of the day speak of judgment and watchfulness, and priests preach on preparing for the second coming. The fast itself continues.
The date
Debre Zeit falls 28 days before Fasika, so its date moves every year with Easter, between early March and early April.
