Filseta (ፍልሰታ, “translation”) celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: according to Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, her body was taken up to heaven after her death. The feast on Nehase 16 ends Tsome Filseta, the two-week fast from Nehase 1 to 15.
Tsome Filseta
The Filseta fast is one of the most widely kept fasts, especially by young people. Many believers attend church every day, and some stay at monasteries and churches for the whole two weeks.
Ashenda and related festivals
In the days around the feast, girls and young women in Tigray and Eritrea celebrate Ashenda, and in parts of Amhara Ashendye, Shadey or Solel: they dress in their best clothes, braid their hair, and go from house to house singing and dancing.
