Erget (ዕርገት, “ascension”) celebrates the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, forty days after the resurrection. It is one of the nine major feasts of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo churches.
How it is celebrated
Erget is a church feast with special services and hymns. It falls in the joyful fifty days after Fasika, when there is no Wednesday and Friday fasting.
The date
Erget is always on a Thursday, 39 days after Fasika (the fortieth day counting Easter Sunday). Its date moves with Easter, between mid-May and early June.
