Derg Downfall Day, usually just called Ginbot 20 (ግንቦት ፳), is a public holiday in Ethiopia. It marks 28 May 1991, when the forces of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) entered Addis Ababa and the military government known as the Derg, led by Mengistu Haile Mariam since the 1970s, came to an end.
How it is marked
The day is an official holiday with government ceremonies. How it is remembered has changed over the years and differs among Ethiopians; for many it is mainly a day off work and school.
The date
Ginbot 20 falls on May 28 in most years. Eritrea, which became independent soon after, celebrates its own Independence Day on May 24.
