International Labour Day (የሠራተኞች ቀን), or May Day, is a public holiday in Ethiopia on May 1, as in many countries. It honours workers and the labour movement.
How it is marked
Trade unions, led by the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions, hold rallies and meetings, and the day is a day off for most workers and schools. In the Ethiopian calendar, May 1 falls on Miazia 23 in most years.
Other public holidays in May
Ethiopia has several public holidays close together in spring: Patriots’ Victory Day on Miazia 27 (around May 5) and Derg Downfall Day on Ginbot 20 (around May 28), and in many years Fasika as well.
