Patriots’ Victory Day (የአርበኞች ቀን) is a public holiday in Ethiopia on Miazia 27. It remembers 5 May 1941, when Emperor Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa after five years of Italian occupation, exactly five years after Italian troops had entered the city on 5 May 1936.
The patriots
The day honours the Arbegnoch (አርበኞች), the patriots who kept up an armed resistance in the countryside throughout the occupation of 1936–1941, and the many who died. Their resistance, together with the Allied campaign in East Africa, ended the occupation.
How it is marked
Official ceremonies are held at the Arat Kilo monument in Addis Ababa, attended by surviving patriots’ associations, with wreath-laying and parades. In the Gregorian calendar the day falls on May 5 in most years.
